We did it! The National Three peaks…well almost.

18/06/2025

Earlier this month, a small team from tombola set out to climb the highest peaks in Scotland, England and Wales to raise money for Breast Cancer Now. While the weather had other ideas about their final summit, they still managed to conquer Ben Nevis and Scafell Pike, and raised an incredible £1,800 in the process.

Find out how it all went from the team that took part...

Peak 1 – ‘The Ben’ and the Beast

"It’s been a week since my colleagues at tombola and I set off to tackle the iconic Three Peaks Challenge to raise money for Breast Cancer Now. My knees are still sore, and I’m hobbling around like I’ve aged 30 years overnight, but it’s a small price to pay to support a charity that does so much for both women and men affected by breast cancer.

We began our adventure in Scotland at Ben Nevis, affectionately known as “The Ben” by the locals. We took the CMD Arete route, a stunning (and slightly terrifying) scramble along the mountain’s ridgeline. I had no idea what I was in for until I found myself clinging to rocky edges that felt like I was hanging off the ends of the Earth. It’s definitely not a route for the faint-hearted or anyone afraid of heights, but the views over the surrounding peaks made every step worth it.

Thanks to Chris and his brilliant team at Corporate Trekking Company, we felt safe and supported the entire way. That first climb took 11 hours, including a slow and steady descent. The thought of a hearty meal at the end kept us going, though conversations quickly turned to food during the hike! Titas was dreaming of fish and chips, I was craving pie and mash, and Katherine had her sights set on a mighty beef burger."

Peak 2 – Scafell Pike Sleep Deprived but still climbing

"Next stop: the Lake District. We rolled in at 2am, grabbed a few hours of sleep, and got ready for Scafell Pike. I could barely walk by then, ice pack in hand, I had to seriously consider whether I could carry on. Chris suggested I sit this one out, and I agreed…until I woke up feeling a bit better. Uphill wasn’t too bad; it was the downhill part that tested me.

We all managed to summit up to Scafell in just two hours, and made our way down at a slower pace, Kath and Titas in 2.5 hours, myself – 3.5-4 hours. Again blessed with beautiful weather and breathtaking views. The camaraderie and banter made it all the more memorable."

Peak 3 - Snowdon – the one that got away!

"Our final challenge was meant to be Snowdon in Wales. We arrived around midnight, collapsed into bed, and were up again early to meet the team. Unfortunately, the weather had other plans. With gale-force winds of 50mph and rain battering the summit while the rest of the UK basked in sunshine, our final hike had to be cancelled for safety reasons.

Disappointed but understanding safely comes first, we made the most of our time. Titas went for a run (somehow still had energy!), while Kath and I treated ourselves to a swim and some much-needed rest.

Although we didn’t complete the final peak, the experience was unforgettable. It’s amazing how far you can push yourself when you're surrounded by the right people and driven by a meaningful cause. Chris and his team, with their marine background and disciplined approach, kept us motivated and moving forward every step of the way and we are very grateful for all their support.  Myself, Kath and Titas have made a pact that we will go and finish the final peak later this year, so the three peaks will be complete.

Between the three of us, we’ve raised over £1,800 to support the vital work of Breast Cancer Now. Thank you to everyone who donated and cheered us on we’re proud, grateful, and still nursing sore knees!"

Fun Fact!

The total height of the 3 peak mountains is 3,407 metres (11,178 ft). The total distance is approximately 23 miles (37km), and that is just the hiking part! There is over 460 miles worth of driving between each of the peaks, more than the distance from London to Edinburgh!

Titas P – Platform Developer

"It has been a week since we did the National Three Peaks Challenge for Breast Cancer Now charity together with colleagues at tombola and what a journey it was!

We ascended Ben Nevis and Scafell Pike in glorious conditions - two unforgettable climbs with spectacular views, unwavering team spirit, and an abundance of determination. However, when we arrived at Snowdonia, we found ourselves facing a yellow weather warning which meant that we had to make a hard decision not to ascend Snowdon. This was very disappointing for us as we were so close to completing the challenge. Yet, I was determined to finish strong, thus I did a 15km solo run in Snowdonia. It was nice and personal way to round off the trip!

The experience was unforgettable, and I’m so grateful for tombola and the rest of the team organising this event! I'm happy with what we achieved, and even happier to be supporting a charity that's doing vital work in the fight against breast cancer."

Kath Henderson – Operational Support Engineer

"I signed up for the National Three Peaks because I like hiking with my partner, and I also did the Yorkshire Three Peaks challenge last year, so I figured, sure, why not? Also the promise for food afterwards, and a good night’s sleep in between? Sure, sounds easy. I did not consider the fact that I would have to climb three of the tallest peaks in the UK.

And you know what? I regret nothing! OK, my calves hurt and stairs are my current nemesis, but it was wonderful. Truly, seeing the face of Ben Nevis and then climbing it was something I will never forget. We cheered each other on, even through the difficulties, including mad headaches and weak knees, and got there together. I can't quite put it into words but I highly recommend not listening to the reasonable part of your brain and just climbing those mountains."

Did you know?

Scafell Pike is a war memorial. It was gifted to the National Trust in 1919 as a memorial to the men of Cumbria who died in World War I. This makes it the UK's highest war memorial.

Chris Howe – Corporate Trekking Company

"A determined group from tombola recently took on the National 3 Peaks Challenge in support of Breast Cancer Now, guided by the fantastic team at Corporate Trekking Company (CTC)

We were blessed with stunning weather in Scotland and the Lake District, making for unforgettable climbs up Ben Nevis and Scafell Pike. Between peaks, comfy hotels, hearty pub meals, and luxury travel helped ease tired legs.

Unfortunately, severe weather in Wales meant our attempt on Snowdon had to be called off for safety—50mph winds, thunder, and lightning made it too risky.

Despite the setback, the team showed incredible determination, spirit, and teamwork over three tough but rewarding days."
