Essential survival tips for outdoor enthusiasts

31/03/25

Do you love the great outdoors and thrilling adventures? If so, this guide is for you! Whether you're hiking, camping, or exploring unknown terrain, these survival tips will help you stay safe and prepared in the wilderness.

How to start a fire

Fire is a must-have survival skill! It provides warmth, cooks food, purifies water, and serves as a distress signal should you need help. Here’s how to get one going:

  • Find materials. Gather dry fire-starting materials like twigs, leaves, and logs.
  • Create a spark. Use friction (rubbing two sticks together) or use sunlight with a magnifying glass to ignite a spark.
  • Add more sticks. Once you have embers, carefully add kindling (small twigs) and gradually increase to larger sticks.
  • Stay safe. Always make sure your fire is safe and fully extinguished before leaving.

Building a shelter

If you find yourself in the wilderness overnight without a tent, don’t panic! Find a dry, elevated area away from hazards like falling branches or flood zones. A simple shelter like a lean-to made from branches and leaves or a debris hut can help keep you warm. Remember, insulation is key, pile on leaves, moss, and dry grass to retain heat.

Navigating without a GPS

Lost with no phone signal? No worries! Nature provides its own navigation tools.

You can determine direction by noting that the sun rises in the east and sets in the west. At night, the North Star serves as a reliable guide, while during the day, the stick-and-shadow method can help you stay on course. Simply place a straight stick, about two feet long, into flat ground and mark the tip of its shadow. After 20–30 minutes, mark the new position of the shadow. The first mark indicates west, while the last mark points east, giving you a basic compass direction. To avoid getting lost, always mark your trail as you go to stop you walking round in circles!

Finding and purifying water

If you're searching for water in the wilderness, listen for the sound of running water, as it often leads to streams or rivers. In mountainous areas, melting snow or ice can provide a reliable source. No matter where you find it, always purify water before drinking. Boiling kills harmful bacteria, while portable filters and purification tablets help remove impurities, ensuring it’s safe to consume.

First aid essentials

Injuries can happen anytime in the wild, so be prepared with a well-stocked first aid kit. Essentials include:

  • Bandages, gauze pads, adhesive tape, antiseptic wipes
  • Scissors, tweezers, pain relief medication
  • Antihistamines for allergic reactions
  • Emergency blanket for warmth

Knowing basic first aid techniques like learning how to treat cuts, burns, insect bites, and dehydration is extremely useful. If you're a frequent adventurer, consider taking a wilderness first aid course.

Staying calm

If you ever get lost, staying calm is your best strategy. Panic will only cloud your judgment, so take a deep breath and assess your situation. Here’s what to do:

  • Look for clues! Pay attention to landmarks, footprints, or any familiar signs that can help you retrace your steps and find your way back.
  • Make yourself easy to find. Shout for help or blow a whistle if you have one. During the day, create a smoky fire by adding grass or leaves to the flames. At night, build a bright fire to catch the attention of rescuers.
  • Stay warm and dry. Set up your tent or find natural shelter to protect yourself from the elements. If you're in a snowy area, dig a hole and carve out a snow cave from the bottom up, ensuring the top remains thick enough to act as a stable roof.
  • Stay calm and think smart. Keeping a clear, problem-solving mindset is key to making the best decisions and increasing your chances of survival.
