Our People, Our Stories
Stacy's experience on the impact of Breast Cancer
08/08/25
At tombola, our people and players are at the heart of everything we do. As part of our partnership with Breast Cancer Now, we have been speaking to members of the tombola team about why this cause matters to them. For Stacy, a Customer Service Advisor in our CX team, the impact of breast cancer is something she has seen affect the lives of those around her.
In the blog below, Stacy shares her personal views on the importance of awareness, early detection and the value of having open and honest conversations.
“My current role at tombola is a Customer Service advisor which forms part of our CX team. I have had my hand in helping our Safeplay Team and have now just been upskilled to support our chat team too!
I think the partnership with Breast Cancer Now matters to our Audience because it impacts such a high percentage of people, this can be directly and indirectly. Most of our players will know someone who has either been diagnosed with Breast Cancer or is associated with someone who has received a diagnosis. Routine checks are not carried out until women are 50 years of age, before this it is down to us to take responsibility to educate ourselves and share our knowledge with others around the signs and symptoms.
Having these conversations and encouraging each other to check regularly will save lives. It is so important to get a diagnosis as early as possible so that necessary treatment can be provided.
I am invested in this partnership as I have been indirectly affected by Breast Cancer. I have seen the impacts this has on both the person suffering and their loved ones. It shocked me to learn that a lot of people do not check themselves or would not know how to. I want us to empower our community to be more proactive and for it not to be a taboo subject.
We all know the facts and figures are available to us if we want to know them and can read up on this as much as we like, but speaking to people and hearing their own personal stories has so much more of an impact. It really hits home just how big this is. I felt humbled by the fact people were willing to speak to me, a complete stranger and tell me their stories, seeing and feeling their emotions through their voice and in their eyes. I have read many stories in magazines and online that have reached me on so many levels, but that personal interaction was different. This is why it is so important to speak up, tell each other our stories, not just friends and family, everyone matters, everyone can make a difference. In day to day life we meet people, we chat and we do not realise what that other person may take away from our conversations. I won't forget the people I met that day and how they opened up their personal journeys. Out of 8 people we spoke to, 7 of them had either been diagnosed or had been close to someone who had received treatment or sadly passed away with Breast Cancer.”
